JAMB, TETFUND, And Others Notified Of New Universities In Lagos by The National Universities Commission (NUC)
NUC notifies JAMB TETFund and others about new universities in Lagos – Confirmed
The Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUST) in Ikorodu and the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) in Ijanikin are the two new institutions.
The National Universities Commission (NUC), Nigeria’s regulatory body for universities, announced that the additional two universities in Lagos State have been communicated to appropriate government educational agencies, including the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), among others.
The permission came after the regulatory authority approved the two new institutions suggested by the state’s governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.The executive secretary of NUC, Abubakar Rasheed, reportedly said this during the presentation of clearance certificate of operations to Mr Sanwo-Olu on Tuesday at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja, according to a statement released by the state government and shared with PREMIUM TIMES by the governor’s senior special assistant on new media, Jubril Gawat.
The Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUST) in Ikorodu and the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) in Ijanikin are the two new institutions. The former is a transformation of the current Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), while the latter is the result of a merger of the Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (AOCOED) in Ijanikin and the Michael Otedola College of Primary Education (MOCPED) in Epe.
“In 2022, the new universities may be able to admit students.”
Tokunbo Wahab, Governor Sanwo-special Olu’s adviser on education, has stated that the approval licence granted to the government by NUC means that fresh students can return to the university for the 2022/2023 academic session.
He did note, however, that the new development means that candidates will no longer be admitted to LASPOTECH, AOCOED, and MOCPED’s existing National Diploma (ND), Higher National Diploma (HND), and National Certificate in Education (NCE) programs.
In an exclusive interview with PREMIUM TIMES, Mr Wahab added that all hands are on deck to ensure a smooth transition of both institutions and personnel.
“I think strongly that between February and May, when UTME registration and examination are slated to take place, we would have done a lot of things and be ready to go,” Mr Wahab added. This year, we want them to begin accepting new students.
“As a result of the NUC’s recognition, they are unable to admit students to existing structures such as polytechnics and colleges of education.” That will come to a stop, but they will have to graduate the students who were admitted before to this.”
Sanwo-Olu is praised by the NUC.
Speaking about the new universities, the NUC’s chairman, Mr Rasheed, a professor, pledged the commission’s full support to the two institutions and urged the Lagos State Government to take full advantage of the commission’s professional and technical advice for the establishment and operation of their universities, according to the statement.
“We applaud the governor’s efforts and initiative,” he stated. We applaud your team’s determination to move Lagos State ahead. We applaud you in particular on your sensible decision to invest in higher education.”The Lagos State University of Science and Technology would undoubtedly boost Lagos’ status as the country’s and West Africa’s industrial and technological centre.” And, if properly supported, this university has the potential to aid Lagos State’s efforts to transition to a knowledge economy.”By investing in education, Lagos as a state can leapfrog others.” I’m aware that Lagos’ economy is the fifth largest on the African continent. Lagos’ economy is worth more than a billion dollars.
Excited Governor
The statement also said governor was excited by the development, noting that with the certificate received by the governor “Lagos State University of Education is now the 56th State university and 204th university in Nigeria, as well as the second university of education in Nigeria while Lagos State University of Science and Technology is 57th state university and 205th university in Nigeria.”
Speaking at the NUC headquarters, Mr Sanwo-Olu, who commended the Commission for granting the operational certificates, said the creation of the two universities by his administration is not about being ambition but doing what is proper for the people of the state.
He praised Mudashiru Obas, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, and the MPs for “working with him and others” to approve the law establishing the two universities.
He also praised the legacy tertiary institutions’ leaders for their understanding.
According to Mr Sanwo-Olu, changing LASPOTECH to University of Science and Technology will result in inventive engineering, science inventions, and other developments that are vital to the country’s and state’s development.
He claims that the two new universities will help meet the demands and needs of the city’s burgeoning youth population.
“It’s about our citizens’ futures.” It’s about our adolescents’ futures, who have faith in us to do the right thing.
He complimented Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obas and the MPs for “working with him and others” to pass the law establishing the two universities.
He also thanked the leaders of legacy tertiary institutions for their patience.
Changing LASPOTECH to University of Science and Technology, according to Mr Sanwo-Olu, will result in imaginative engineering, science inventions, and other advances that are critical to the country’s and state’s development.
